With the introduction of the new Mantelverordnung and the revision of the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance (BBodSchV), as well as the implementation of the Substitute Building Materials Ordinance (EBV) on August 1, 2023, the focus has shifted even more towards protecting this valuable resource. It is especially important to know how and where the excavated soil will be used in the future—whether it will restore soil function or be incorporated into a technical structure. The type of analysis is chosen accordingly.

The Mantelverordnung regulates different analytical requirements for the same soil, depending on how it is used. If you want to reuse excavated soil to restore soil function, you will need an analysis according to the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance (BBodSchV). However, even within this framework, different analyses may be required.
On the other hand, if you want to use the soil material in a technical structure, such as roads, pathways, parking lots, railway tracks, storage or parking areas, utility trenches, construction pits, noise and sight protection walls, or embankment stabilizations, then your material must be analyzed according to the Substitute Building Materials Ordinance (EBV).
