MATERIAL ANALYTICS IN THE AREA
Chloride Content in Hardened Concrete
Chloride, often present in large quantities in de-icing salts, primarily reaches concrete surfaces during the winter months through salt spreading. Over time, the chloride penetrates deeper into the concrete element and can eventually reach the reinforcement steel inside, where it can cause significant damage. Chloride destroys the passive layer (protective coating) of the steel, making it vulnerable to corrosion. Chlorides in concrete therefore pose a threat to the load-bearing capacity of supports and walls in parking garages and bridges, often necessitating the repair of reinforced concrete. Key factors include the type and quality of the concrete and the amount of chloride that has reached the reinforcement.
To ensure the proper restoration of reinforced concrete, such as that from underground parking structures, reliable analysis of harmful substances in the concrete is essential. We are happy to support you with our expertise in this area.
Routine analysis of drilling dust samples for chloride content is well-established in our lab
Sectioning of concrete cores into corresponding depth profiles
Grinding of the resulting depth profiles for precise analysis to determine how far the salt has penetrated
The samples, often provided as drilling dust, are sent to our lab. If necessary, they are dried and ground by our materials testing team during sample preparation.
The obtained drilling dust samples are weighed into a digestion vessel and boiled with diluted acid to extract the chlorides from the concrete powder into the added water.
The analysis is performed automatically using potentiometric titration according to DIN EN 14629.
We are accredited for the determination of chloride content in hardened concrete according to DIN EN 14629 (METHOD B). In addition to the analysis, we also offer sample preparation services:
Sectioning of your collected concrete cores
Drying and grinding to the specified particle size
Analysis according to DIN EN 14629 (METHOD B)
