The shortage of skilled workers is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. However, we have the power to make a difference – and we can start early! How? By demonstrating to young people how exciting and secure vocational training can be, especially in the field of chemistry, which holds a touch of magic. Our recent visit to the "Am Schießberg" comprehensive school provided valuable insights into the world of experiments and career opportunities.
Vocational Training as a Pathway to Success
As the skilled worker shortage becomes increasingly evident, it is crucial to inform young talent about the diverse training opportunities available. Current statistics reveal that in 2023, Germany faced a shortfall of approximately 570,000 skilled workers.
To combat this trend, our company has been successfully focusing on vocational training for many years, actively engaging with students in the region. These initiatives allow us to connect directly with potential trainees and showcase the exciting career paths available within our organization.
Practical Experience Inspires Enthusiasm
Our trainees, Marlena and Laura (chemical laboratory assistants), along with Sedat and Nils (building material testers), introduced their professions to students in the 8th grade and above at the "Am Schießberg" comprehensive school. They were supported by their trainers, Axel, Noah, and Julia.
The school visit provided students with valuable hands-on experience and a chance to explore various industries. Chemistry plays a particularly fascinating role here: it is not just a science; it possesses an element of magic. Young people who wish to uncover the "magic behind chemistry" can explore captivating phenomena in these careers while engaging in practical work.
Experience the Magic of Chemistry in Action
One highlight included measuring the pH levels of different household substances and conducting a titration experiment with red cabbage juice. Our trainee Laura also demonstrated how to create "invisible ink" using phenolphthalein. When phenolphthalein comes into contact with alkaline substances, it turns purple – a captivating example of the chemical magic hidden in everyday life! The results of this experiment can be viewed in the video featured on our LinkedIn profile.
Shaping the Future Together
Let’s join forces to enhance the importance of vocational training and encourage more young people to seize these exciting opportunities. By doing so, we can nurture the next generation of skilled workers and effectively address the skilled worker shortage in the long term.
