Precision, flexibility and speed in the area of analytical problem solving

– 24.02.2026
From March 3 to 5, 2026, a conference and exhibition on the topic of “Applied Research for Defense and Security in Germany” will take place in Bonn. Under the theme “Shaping the Future Through Research and Technology,” we at Tritech will be presenting a talk. We believe that corrosion is a particularly important issue in the security sector. If materials fail in an emergency, it can be a matter of life and death. Furthermore, the security sector often relies on innovative and technically advanced materials that must be preserved and protected.
In Germany alone, annual losses due to corrosion amount to approximately 110 to 150 billion euros, which corresponds to about 3–4% of the gross domestic product.
Corrosion can occur anywhere metals are used. Corrosion destroys valuable resources and is often associated with high follow-up costs. Effective corrosion protection strategies represent a significant economic factor and ensure safety and value retention.
In the defense sector, materials and systems are subjected to exceptionally demanding environmental conditions. Vehicles, sensor systems, maritime systems, and, not least, weapon platforms must function reliably over long periods of operation, even when exposed to extreme climatic and mechanical stresses. Therefore, corrosion resistance plays a central role in material selection.
Corrosion poses not only an economic risk but also a safety risk. Material damage can cause malfunctions, reduced operational readiness, and, in an emergency, safety-critical failures. Therefore, systematically designed corrosion protection is an integral part of the development, qualification, and maintenance of defense technology products.
To ensure the reliability of defense technology systems throughout their entire life cycle, standardized and application-oriented corrosion tests are conducted in the laboratory. These tests are designed to reproducibly simulate the diverse environmental stresses to which materials and assemblies are exposed in real-world use.
Laboratory testing enables:
Corrosion tests provide a reliable basis for evaluating material selection, surface treatment, and design measures. They play a key role in ensuring operational readiness under extreme environmental conditions, ranging from Arctic cold to desert climates and maritime exposure.
